Chapter 17: The Guest Takes Over the Host
Chapter 17: The Guest Takes Over the Host
Just as Lee Ethan was counting the money, a strange feeling welled up in his heart, which made him put down the banknotes, reach for the pistol on the bedside table, and turn off the room lights at the same time.
This wasn't the first time he'd felt this way; although it wasn't a hallucination of the Shining, it was still a kind of intuition.
Li Yisen remained behind the door, waiting for any movement from inside or outside.
At the same time, three masked men were leaning against the wall outside, one of them looking at the man in the lead.
"Is the boss really going to charge in?"
"He turned off the lights as soon as we arrived, which is a bit of a coincidence. Should we really alert the police again?"
"..."
Suddenly, the lights in the neighboring house came on, and the sounds of a man drinking, a woman scolding, and the voices of teenagers could be heard mixed in.
The masked man hesitated for a moment, then gave up.
"Let him live a few more days. Once I've finished what I'm doing, I'll cut off his head to offer as a sacrifice to my brother. Don't think that sneak attacks are so impressive. I'll show you what a mere cop is like compared to a real soldier."
"We won't go down the mountain until we've cleared out all the stock."
"Yes."
The three masked men sneaked away, while Lee Ethan remained behind the door, still gripping his pistol.
"Come on, let me see how much of a reward you can give me."
Half an hour later, Li Yisen felt a little numb. Could it be his imagination? No, he hadn't found anything when he checked the surveillance footage on his phone. Could it really be his imagination?
Time passed day by day, and just like that, the first week of the new year came to an end.
As a new police officer, Li Yisen noticed that the city's crackdown on drug dealers was intensifying, let alone the veteran local police officers.
Even the number of gunfights increased by 50% compared to usual, and all the police officers were on high alert.
Soon it was time for Ethan Lee's team to be on duty 24 hours a day. In some places, American police officers would arrange their work hours as duty days, standby days, shift days, or assistant shift days.
On duty days, you need to be on duty 24 hours a day. The other three days are regular working hours, without distinguishing between day shifts and night shifts.
In the patrol team's meeting room, Superintendent Andrew Bailey finally explained the changes of the past few days to his subordinates in detail.
"I believe everyone has noticed that the city has become more tense, with frequent crackdowns on drug dealers."
The police officers at the scene all wore serious expressions, because in just one week, two officers had died in the line of duty and six had been injured, which they could not afford to take lightly.
Andrew walked to the front row of rookie seats, his gaze sweeping over the rookies, while completely ignoring Ethan Li, who was behaving somewhat unexpectedly, without needing Andrew to put pressure on him or educate him.
Andrew asked.
"Evelyn, do you know what caused the increased intensity of the attacks?"
Evelyn paused for a moment, then stood up and spoke loudly.
"Because they have a reason to be suppressed."
Be careful.
"They're too arrogant."
Lee Esen's lips almost twitched; it really was a very simple answer.
Andrew Bailey nodded, gesturing for the other person to sit down.
"That's right, that's the reason. They're too arrogant."
Lee Ethan was dumbfounded again. Good heavens, this black braised egg actually agrees with the newbie's opinion.
"According to statistics, the amount of smuggled drugs in San Antonio Hills has tripled in the past two months. They're practically disregarding us police officers. This is a change that county headquarters can no longer ignore. So we need to figure out their drug trafficking routes, the number of people involved, and pull out their tentacles. Understand?"
"clear."
"This is the latest intelligence; be extra careful around strangers during your patrols."
"Yes."
Lee Esen flipped through the latest files, and the intelligence inside proved that the drug dealers arrested a few days ago were indeed useful.
Just then, Andrew spoke again.
"Rebecca, your partner has taken leave. The work in the neighborhood is quite demanding these days, so I won't transfer you to a less demanding position. You'll be working with Ethan and the others."
"Yes, I will take good care of them."
One sentence made Lee Ethan look at the 40-year-old policewoman, Rebecca Baker, a Level 2 Constable. She must have been quite attractive in her youth, as evidenced by her figure.
However, this guy was clearly a guest, but unexpectedly he stole the show right from the start.
Andrew didn't say anything about what his subordinates said, but simply gave them a few more instructions.
.
In the armory, Evelyn followed behind again with two shotguns, but this time there was an "officer" with her.
Rebecca suddenly stopped and reached for a shotgun, examining it herself.
"Evelyn, you need to clean your weapons carefully. Look, this part doesn't feel right and it's affecting your shooting. You need to wipe it clean with a towel."
"..."
Evelyn was a little confused when she picked up the shotgun. She had no idea about this; neither of the two instructors had mentioned it.
"Shall I take it back and wipe it?"
Faced with the gaze directed at him, Li Yisen finally took out a piece of paper and handed it to the policewoman.
"Since the officer isn't used to it, let's wipe it clean."
"oh."
Evelyn picked up a piece of paper and started wiping. Rebecca, standing beside her, couldn't help but smile. She enjoyed the feeling; a mixed-race girl and a newbie, of course they had to listen to her.
"Ethan, I'm telling you, you have to teach the newbies carefully. You've just been transferred here and you're not used to it yet."
Good heavens, even Lee Esen didn't expect his temporary partner to push his luck like this.
"I understand. I wonder how many trainees you've mentored, Rebecca."
"..."
Rebecca's expression froze instantly. She had only taught half of it, and the superintendent handed it over to someone else halfway through. As for the reason, she believed it was obviously the probationary officer's problem.
Hmph, don't think you can be disrespectful to your seniors just because you've made a few small contributions.
The police car patrolled, which annoyed someone a bit, but didn't delay the case too much. Li Yisen received a 1-star reward in the morning. The only thing that bothered him was Evelyn, who was at the lowest level.
At lunchtime, at Rebecca's request, they went to a restaurant where several first and second-level police officers were also present. It was clearly a place where officers from their circle gathered for a meal.
Rebecca sat down in the group of police officers and chatted and laughed.
"Rebecca, you've really had a tough time, having to teach two newbies right off the bat."
"Haha, it's alright, of course I'll teach them well."
In the eyes of some police officers, even though Li Yisen performed exceptionally well, it was a fact that he had only graduated a year ago, so he was still considered a rookie.
Evelyn leaned close to Lee Ethan's ear.
"I'm not used to being around Rebecca."
Li Yisen said casually as he ate.
"I hate you, but why are you being so hypocritical?"
"....."
Li Yisen tore off a piece of chicken leg meat in one bite.
"This person is indeed difficult to get along with."
Although he didn't consider himself an arrogant person, he was really not used to facing such a self-important guy. Perhaps Rebecca was only humble when facing people of the same level or those who were stronger than her.
Unfortunately, he was also a newcomer, and the person he was most familiar with was the young policewoman in front of him. He was not familiar with the other officers at all.
The relationships among the other members of the three groups are still unclear, and rashly confronting Rebecca could make future work more difficult.
The officers quickly dispersed, and Rebecca came over and called out.
"We should get to work."
Evelyn was dumbfounded, holding the half-eaten hamburger.
"It's only been ten minutes, and I haven't finished eating yet."
"Work is important, you'll get used to it eventually."
Evelyn stared blankly at the policewoman sitting in the passenger seat, and finally couldn't help but speak.
I hate her.
They stuffed the remaining hamburger into their mouths in three bites, their cheeks bulging out, leaving the person watching speechless.
Sure enough, he choked up the next second.
"Waaaaah."
"for you."
Evelyn hurriedly grabbed the water bottle and drank it down, not caring whether someone else had drunk from it.
"Cough cough, I'm alive now, thank you, senior."
You owe me a drink.
"Can't you just treat me?"
You're dreaming.
.
The police car continued its patrol when Rebecca suddenly pointed to a passing vehicle.
"Ethan, stop the car next to us."
Li Yisen glanced at it and did as instructed, because the front panel of the vehicle was damaged, which was against regulations.
The vehicle was quickly stopped, and Li Yisen and the other two got out. Two of them walked towards the other side, while the third stayed behind the police car door to provide support at any time.
Lee Ethan could tell that the driver was a Hispanic man.
"Sir, I pulled you over because your front panel is damaged. According to California traffic laws, you will receive a ticket."
The driver remained completely calm.
"I have actually received a repair ticket."
"When?"
According to the law, a ticket is valid for one month. This means that as long as you present the ticket within this month, you will not receive another ticket for damage to the front panel of your car.
