Chapter 9 [Swallow] Potion
Chapter 9 [Swallow] Potion
The herbalist nun held the green liquid in the spoon in front of Alwin's eyes.
"Did you figure it out?"
Arwen activates [Alchemy Sense].
Soon, he was astonished to find that ever since the herbalist scooped out that spoonful, the green ripples in the crucible had become more intense and softer.
The gray cat's eyes narrowed involuntarily.
He discovered a thread, barely visible to the naked eye, swimming in the liquid in the spoon.
"This is...this is the fascia of a water ghost's brain."
Alwin muttered to himself.
The herbalist nun picked up the silver tweezers placed beside the table and skillfully removed the fascia, placing it on a clean tray.
"Being able to discover this proves that your observation skills are excellent, but it is undeniable that you have cat's eyes due to a mutation, an advantage that is rare among ordinary people."
"The water ghost's brain contains potent toxins that need to be neutralized by celandine flowers, but this water ghost's fascia will counteract the medicinal effects of the celandine flowers."
Alwin chimed in, "That would reduce the effectiveness of the Swallow Potion."
The herbalist smiled with satisfaction. "That's right. The most important thing in alchemy is to regulate the balance of energy. The materials used to make Swallow Potion don't contain much energy, so a small mistake won't be a big deal."
Changing the subject, she continued.
"Arwen, has Vesemir told you the story of Lake Mokva?"
Alwin shook his head.
The herbalist nun put down her spoon and straightened her cuffs. "Lake Mokwa was once a very beautiful lake, but during a war, many ghosts bred in it."
"In your eyes, these guys are demons. At that time, there were so many demons that they affected almost all the surrounding towns and villages, causing countless deaths and injuries. This angered the king at the time, so he sent his chief court wizard."
"That wizard was a true alchemist. He simply threw a bucket of magic potion into the water, and the entire Lake Mokva boiled instantly, turning night into day."
"Not to mention ghosts, even fish and shrimp have all disappeared. In just a few minutes, not a trace of life has been left."
"Even now, the ecology of Lake Mokwa has not fully recovered."
Alwin was deeply shocked.
Alchemy has such power.
Arwen's understanding of alchemy was still based on his impression of potions aiding combat in The Witcher games.
Now that I hear it, the power of this magic potion barrel is almost comparable to the legendary fog of death.
The herbalist nun said seriously, "Therefore, even the simplest alchemy must be done with utmost care and precise measurement, without the slightest error."
Alwin nodded solemnly, "I understand."
[Herbal Alchemy Experience +30!]
Alwin's eyes lit up.
Another 30 experience points!
If I could learn from her for a few more days, my herbal alchemy skills would definitely improve much faster than if I just figured it out on my own. I absolutely can't miss this great opportunity!
"Alright, let's pack up. The alchemy course is about to end."
Alwin snapped out of his daze and poured the swallow potion from the crucible into a prepared glass bottle.
After tidying up the table, Alwin hesitated for a moment before speaking to the herbalist nun.
"Ms. Veris, you are very knowledgeable. May I learn more about alchemy from you?"
The herbalist nun stared intently into Arwen's cat-like eyes. She looked for a long time, and saw sincerity and a longing for alchemy in those gray vertical pupils.
She hadn't seen this in many years, not even from those apprentices who considered themselves geniuses.
She shook her head. "You're a bright kid, but unfortunately, I have no intention of taking on students in Kaer Morhen."
Upon hearing this, Alwin felt a pang of disappointment, but he still performed the apprentice's salute.
The herbalist nun chuckled. "Being my student isn't an option right now, but I'll be living in Kaer Morhen for a few more months and will need to process some herbs. Would you be interested in becoming my temporary assistant?"
"As long as you can complete the work I assign, it's not impossible for me to give you some pointers when I have free time."
Alwin's cat-like eyes widened instantly, and he replied without hesitation, "Of course, it would be my honor to work for you."
"Let me make this clear beforehand: I'm very strict. If you can't complete the task, I'll replace you at any time."
Alwin straightened his back, his attitude extremely serious.
"I will definitely work hard."
At the same time, a young man with white hair and wearing a black leather jacket walked into the stone chamber.
His tall stature, pale face, and the two swords on his back exude a sharp and imposing aura.
It's Geralt.
Arwin bowed, and the latter nodded in goodwill.
"I met Paul and the others. They said you hadn't come out yet, so they came to check on you."
As Geralt spoke, his amber cat eyes swept over the Swallow Potion on the table.
The color of this swallow medicine, a vibrant green imbued with life, is rarely seen even in Kaer Morhen's inventory.
He knew that the alchemy techniques of the Temple of Meriteli were renowned throughout the Northern Kingdom, but the fact that such an excellent product was produced under such rudimentary conditions still surprised him.
"Ms. Veris, is this the Swallow Potion you concocted?"
The herbalist nun shook her head. "It wasn't me, it was my new assistant who made it."
"assistant?"
The herbalist nun turned her head and looked at Arwen, followed by Geralt's astonished gaze.
"Arwin?"
"Is this true?"
As one of only two official Witchers in Kael'thas, he has a good understanding of his apprentice's alchemy skills.
Even for him, it would take time and luck to concoct a swallow potion of this quality.
And this actually happened to a mere apprentice Witcher.
The herbalist smiled and said, "Of course."
"He has a good foundation in alchemy, is very talented, and works hard. It's only natural that I would take him on as my assistant."
"And I also need an assistant to help me with some miscellaneous tasks."
"There's nothing surprising about that."
Geralt still found it somewhat unbelievable.
The herbalist nun had not been in Kaer Morhen for long, but in that short time, Geralt had already learned something about her temperament.
Despite her gentle demeanor, the woman before him, Veris, was extremely arrogant. Vesemir had even warned him to stay away from this herbalist nun and avoid any contact with her.
In short, the other party is shrouded in mystery.
However, he quickly suppressed his shock.
As the genius Vesemir spoke of, he had no reason to be jealous of an apprentice four years his junior, nor did he possess the petty, worldly nature to be jealous.
Moreover, the emergence of an alchemy prodigy in Kyle Morhen is definitely a great thing that excites the Wolf Faction.
The herbalist nun straightened her nun's skirt with both hands.
"It's getting late, I should go back. I've had enough of this basement, I need to go back and take a good shower."
"Alvin, starting tomorrow, you can come to me in the second room on the left on the second floor of the castle after training every afternoon."
"Yes."
"Geralt, see you later."
Geralt snapped out of his reverie and said goodbye, "See you later, Verius."
After watching the herbalist nun leave, he used his cat-like eyes to take another look at the black-haired boy in front of him.
"Come find me at the training ground after dinner," Geralt paused, "and remember, only you are allowed."
