Chapter 274 Jormungandr
Chapter 274 Jormungandr
Chapter 274 Jormungandr
Ragnarok begins with the rebellion of the fire giant Surtur, who will lead the army of Muspelheim, the land of fire, to war against the gods of Asgard alongside the frost giants.
Ultimately, Surtur will reclaim the Eternal Flame, ignite the Twilight Blade, and destroy the entire realm of the gods. With the fall of Asgard, the remaining realms of the Nine Realms will also be destroyed in the ensuing chaos.
This is the whole story of Ragnarok, but there are other stories to tell within it.
For example, as written in myths and prophecies, it is said that, by fate, Odin, the king of the gods, was torn to pieces by the wolf Fenrir in the battle of Asgard, and Thor, the god of thunder, perished together with the World Serpent.
Just as the mythical prophecy foretold, this is how it should have been.
But now fate has played a cruel joke on everyone.
Thor, who was supposed to fight Jormungandr, the serpent of Midgard, to the end of time, inexplicably died in the battle.
With his death, Mjolnir, imbued with the power of Thor, fell to the highest peak of the Scandinavian Mountains.
Having lost his destined rival, Jormungandr, whose fate had spiraled out of control, fell into unconscious confusion. He continued to hover aimlessly in Midgard, above Earth, attacking any creature that approached him at will.
Its enormous body, large enough to encircle the entire Earth, blots out the sun; a single scale reflecting a patch of light can illuminate a ground the size of a lake.
All the weapons that have been developed to date pale in comparison to this colossal behemoth that seems to have crawled out of a myth.
Jormungandr is not even the most imminent threat.
Everywhere on Earth is being attacked by the frost giants from Jotunheim. The frost giant king Laufey has retrieved the Casket of Ice, gaining power enough to contend for supremacy over the Nine Realms. Mortal armies are utterly powerless to resist, and Midgard will soon fall completely.
Bastion, located in Latvia, was one of the strongholds of the gradually retreating resistance forces, and the remaining members of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers used it as one of the bridgeheads to resist the invasion of the Frost Giants.
"Kill them all!"
After repelling the frost giants' attack once again, Natalie, setting aside her scalding gun barrels, took stock of the inventory and survivors, and came to a heartbreaking conclusion—weapons, ammunition, and personnel were all becoming increasingly scarce.
Although the Jotunheim forces hastily retreated after leaving behind countless frost giants and servants' corpses, no one felt any joy at the victory; all they felt was a despair that seemed to stretch endlessly into the distance.
Uru Steel has run out of ammunition, and the rebels who could be contacted by radio have all lost contact.
Earth's resources are dwindling, while Laufey, the Frost Giant King, possesses inexhaustible frost power. If this continues, everyone will surely perish.
To this end, Nick Fury proposed a plan based on theories from Norse mythology:
"We have to break through."
Inside the vast fortress were only Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Commander Hill—the last remaining high-ranking members of S.H.I.E.L.D.
And a scientist in charge of logistics: "What do we do now?"
He was the one who created the Uru Steel ammunition, giving humanity the power to fight back against these magical creatures, but now his eyes are filled with doubt and unease:
"In mythology, Thor was supposed to die alongside Jormungandr!"
Spacetime is out of order, destiny is lost, and Doctor Doom's time machine malfunctions.
Forget the myths and legends, the fact is that Jormungandr is alive and well, while Thor is dead!
Everything happened too suddenly. From the moment Thor died, the world was heading toward inevitable destruction in almost a week.
Following in Thor's footsteps were most of the Avengers members—Hulk, Ant-Man, Wasp, Iron Man, and Captain America. The most powerful superhero team on Earth was simply no match for the World Serpent, a force that represented the end of the world itself.
"I went through all sorts of hardships to get to Doctor Doom's palace, not to listen to your mythological tales!"
In Nick Fury's eyes, these intellectuals always hesitated before acting: "Just do as I say unless you have another way!"
The plan was simple: they would gather all the surviving forces within the castle, seize all the remaining weapons and robot army from the Destroyer, and then launch an attack eastward in their last Quinjet.
On the Siberian wasteland, they will engage in a final battle against the frost giants and Jormungandr.
Will we win?
With nearly a ton of high-explosive missiles crammed into the cockpit, Nick Fury simply smiled calmly at the scientists' questions and pulled the launch safety.
"It depends on how you perceive the word 'win'."
boom!
As the shell was fired, Jormungandr, who was hit on one of the scales, was unharmed, but the huge sound of the explosion finally attracted the attention of the World Giants hovering in the sky above the earth.
The monstrous serpent roared to the sky, its strange syllables audible throughout the entire Earth.
Whether out of anger or curiosity, Jormungandr crashed to the ground, hovering above mountains, land, and sea. Its body writhed, driving its gaping maw, larger than the heavens and earth, toward Nick Fury and his group.
The serpent's enormous size meant that even its smallest movement triggered an unprecedentedly massive earthquake across the globe.
Seeing that Jormungandr was completely unharmed by the attacks of various weapons, the scientist glanced around the cockpit and found that one person was missing.
He suddenly understood: to fight the demonic serpent with the body of a mortal was a battle that could never be won.
Are you sure this will work?
"How would I know?"
Nick Fury focused intently on piloting the Quinjet, dodging the massive, mountain-like head of the behemoth, while the other heroes and combat teams simultaneously launched an attack on the ground.
"You've read more myths than I have, so why don't you tell me if this will work?"
Black Widow, who was on the spaceship at the beginning, is no longer there.
As a former member of the USSR's most elite intelligence team, she excelled at infiltration, disguise, and scouting.
She might not be of much use on the front lines, but she could be surprisingly effective in places unseen by the enemy.
Nick Fury launched a suicidal attack outside the castle, tearing through the encirclement, simply to create a commotion and draw all attention to this side.
So that the last member of the Avengers could reach the location of Mjolnir, Thor's hammer—the highest peak in Scandinavia.
After all, myths and legends, as well as Thor himself, have said that whoever wields Mjolnir, if qualified, will possess the power of Thor.
"Then I just hope that this part recorded in the myth is also wrong."
Scientists are pessimistic about this because they don't really believe that Black Widow will be able to do anything after finding Thor's hammer.
Humans cannot contend with the mortal serpent that emerged from mythology; only Thor, also a god, can defeat it.
They were merely sacrificial offerings, meant to summon the true God of Thunder, even if there was only a one in ten thousand chance.
Black Widow—she has a dark past that's hard to talk about, and no one thinks she's qualified to lift Thor's hammer, not even herself.
But since the myths are wrong, Jormungandr is still alive, and Thor is dead, who can be so sure that the proverbs about Thor's hammer are 100% accurate?
Meanwhile, with the help of the aircraft, Black Widow finally found Mjolnir's location.
This warhammer, imbued with supreme divine power, is being closely guarded by a group of frost giants and trolls who refuse to leave.
Damn it.
With the bullets loaded, Black Widow had no choice but to charge forward despite the danger.
She didn't know what the outcome would be, but she couldn't just do nothing.
In such an apocalyptic world, there must be at least a glimmer of hope, right?
