Mystery: From Celestial Venerable's Backup to Red Priest

Chapter 4 Double Script

Chapter 4 Double Script

These past few days, Evan has been oscillating between the Gnostic Society, the Witch Cult, and the Aurora Society, carefully dealing with the cunning witches while actively organizing the knowledge of "Lord of Mysteries" in his mind.

She always fantasized about receiving her brother's reply and being able to go to Backlund as soon as possible. She imagined how she would quickly improve her rank after entering the City of Ten Thousand, how she would obtain the subsequent potion formulas from the two witch organizations, and even how she could obtain further materials. However, she never thought about doing anything about the beginning of all the stories at the end of the Fifth Age—Ince Zangwell's plan to advance.

Although Evan doesn't know the subsequent plot due to his missing memories of Lord of Mysteries, he can see how important Tingen's matter is just from the known plot.

This involves whether the Goddess of Night can obtain the legacy of the God of Death through a similar path, whether the son of the creator of Silver City, the Angel King 'Adam' through the audience's path, can obtain the final material for becoming a god, and even more so, the arrival and growth of the absolute protagonist, Klein.

The situation in Tingen is complicated, and Evan is not really willing to get involved for personal gain. If he rashly gets involved, he could easily be doomed.

But what truly horrified Evan was that he hadn't considered anything related to Tingen at all, nor had he noticed that when he reread the contents of "Lord of Mysteries" in his mind, he had repeatedly uttered the name "Adam" without any restraint. These were things that should have made Evan wary, yet he himself hadn't felt the necessary vigilance.

This gave Evan a chill down his spine, and he tried to recall if he had done anything unusual in the past few days.

Evan's silence also caught the attention of the butler, who, seeing Evan's frightening silence, suggested:

"The Tingen post office has temporarily suspended mail delivery services and it is expected to take at least a week to resume. If you have something important to report, I can have someone send an urgent telegram to Backlund."

Actually, when Evan sent a letter to Backlund before, the butler also sent a letter to Backlund. In the letter, he described Evan's recent situation in detail to Evan's brother and expressed his concerns about Evan.

In the letter, the butler listed Evan's unusual behavior during this period, including but not limited to Evan's obsession with communicating with shady occult enthusiasts, his enthusiasm for attending banquets hosted by political socialites, his ambiguous behavior with socialites, and even his recent suicide attempt.

Although Evan explained that he was writing a detective novel and was experimenting with hanging himself, which led to the accident, the butler didn't believe him at all and instead thought that Evan must have developed mental problems recently.

Mr. Buck, the old butler, had taken care of Evan for ten years and had no children of his own, so he had always regarded Evan as his own child, essentially acting as Evan's guardian in Tingen.

He couldn't hide the changes in Evan during this time from him, which made him feel deeply guilty, thinking that he hadn't taken good care of Evan. At the same time, he realized the seriousness of the matter and wrote to Evan's brother, Robert Horn, hoping that he would come to deal with Evan's situation as soon as possible.

The butler's letter and Evan's letter were sent at the same time, which also means that the butler's letter had not yet reached Backlund, so he was also eager to inform Robert about Evan's situation.

Ai Wen initially wanted to refuse, but after a second thought, he nodded and instructed:

"I've graduated from university and it's time to find something to do. Send a telegram to my brother saying I want to go to Backlund, the capital of all cities, and ask him to agree!"

Mr. Buck, the butler, refilled Evan's glass with juice, saying as he did so:

"I'll send someone to the telegraph office in a bit."

With a heavy heart, Evan finished his breakfast without eating anything, declined the butler's offer to send a car, and left the luxury villa alone with his cane, walking through the Golden Phoenix District of Tingen City.

Walking along the wide avenue of the Golden Phoenix District, ignoring the tall carriages coming and going, Evan kept thinking about Tingen, wondering if he had been included in 'Adam's' sight, or in the sight of the Goddess of the Night.

Ultimately, through Klein's encounter in Lord of Mysteries, Evan realized that his existence could not be hidden from the Goddess of Night and the King of Angels, Adam.

As seen in Lord of Mysteries' revenge against Ince Zangwill, Klein has never truly left the sights of these two powerful figures.

With limited information, Evan could easily determine that Klein's cheat was the ultimate level above the three adjacent paths of "diviner," "thief," and "apprentice."

Even with such a top-tier cheat code, the protagonist Klein couldn't escape the watchful eyes of the two big shots, and Evan didn't think he could be an exception.

At the same time, Evan felt that his cheat ability, which allowed him to become an extraordinary individual through both the "assassin" and "hunter" paths without any risk, must also be a top-tier thing corresponding to these two adjacent paths.

Since I've been under the watchful eyes of these two big shots, I probably don't have any secrets to keep. Rather than being apprehensive, I might as well face it openly and let things take their course.

Having figured this out, Evan's mental strain lessened considerably, and his tense nerves gradually relaxed. However, Evan did not give up thinking about the whole matter.

As can be seen from Lord of Mysteries, the two big shots generally do not easily interfere in Klein's affairs.

Even though Klein, burdened by the powerful cheat code of the Gray Mist, repeatedly sabotaged Ince Zangwell's third-rate script and, in effect, the deeper script of "Adam," the two big shots never intervened further in Klein's actions.

Of course, the reason they didn't directly intervene could also be because the commotion Klein caused didn't actually disrupt Ince Zangwill's operation to obtain the ashes from the Church of St. Serena; it only delayed it somewhat.

The Goddess of Night's goal lies in the Death God's legacy behind Azik, while Adam's goal lies in his final material for becoming a god, the '0' level sealed artifact—008.

At the same time, if Adam wants to get 008 into his hands without any risk, he must first hand over Azik and Death's legacy to the Goddess of Night, and at the same time, he must ensure that 008 is unaware that he is in Adam's script, so that 008 will come to him without any warning, according to Adam's script.

As seen in Klein's final battle to avenge Ince Zangwell, 008 was not entirely helpless against Adam.

Therefore, in the Tingen story, Adam cannot make his move too obvious, lest 008 notice the traces of Adam's actions and thus sense the danger.

So... this gave Evan the opportunity to verify his conjecture. At the same time, Evan still had some doubts about whether the interference with his letter and its failure to reach Backlund was part of 008's script or Adam's script.

"If Adam intervened when my letter was intercepted, it means that my letter affected Adam's acquisition of 008's script."

If 008 intervened when his letter was intercepted, it would mean that he, a character not originally in the Lord of Mysteries, had officially entered 008's script, and that his letter had affected Ince Zangwill's plan and 008's script.

What was so special about the letter he wrote back then, the one about wanting to go to Backlund, that it could influence the most elite 'audience'? It was just an ordinary letter expressing a desire to go to the capital!" Evan was completely baffled.

If it affected Adam, and Adam intercepted Evan's letter outside Tingen, Evan wouldn't care. Because under Adam's watchful eye, nothing he did would make a difference, so he might as well lie down, leave Tingen as soon as possible, and run far away so as not to get in the way of other people's business. Adam wouldn't investigate further.

"But if I've gotten caught up in 008's script, and affected 008's script, and affected Ince Zangwell's plans, then my current situation could be very dangerous," Evan thought to himself, his eyes narrowing and gleaming.

As we know from the book "Lord of Mysteries", whenever the presence of the gray fog disrupts 008's script, 008 will erase what he has written, making it stand out in the script. This is why Ince Zangwill was determined to kill Klein in the end, but spared Leonard Mitchell, who was unconscious nearby.

In Ince Zangwell's eyes, Klein was a mysterious and dangerous individual who could repeatedly circumvent 008's plans. As long as he was alive, he would inevitably cause unpredictability in his plans. Killing Klein would also eliminate any future troubles.

"So, in his writing, in his eyes, am I also a similar kind of trouble?"

So for Evan now, the most urgent thing is to find out whether he has officially entered the sights of Ince Zangwill and 008, and what their attitude towards Evan is.

Will Ince Zangwill, while continuing to implement his plans, also arrange for official forces such as the Night Watchers, Punishers, or the Mechanical Heart to eliminate any factors he deems unstable?

Evan was deeply worried about this, after all, there were many things about him that could not withstand investigation. For example, he had close ties with members of the Aurora Society who had possessed the Antigonus Family Notes and was being recruited by them. He also had close ties with witches and was connected to two secret organizations closely related to witches.

Putting himself in their shoes, Evan asked himself if he would have done the same if he were in Inszangwell's position.

Thinking of this, Evan's nerves, which had just relaxed, tensed up again. He felt inexplicably surrounded by malice, and his sense of insecurity rose sharply.

Just as Evan was walking with his head down, deep in thought, he suddenly heard singing coming from not far away.

When Evan looked up, he realized that he had unknowingly arrived at the St. Serena Church, which belongs to the Church of the Goddess of Night, in the northern district of Tingen.

Hearing the calming choir singing coming from the church, Evan felt a stirring in his heart, then smiled slightly, picked up his cane, and walked towards the church.
