Chu Hang felt incredibly comfortable. He immediately closed his eyes and focused all his attention on his ears. This time, he listened with greater concentration than ever before.
Countless fragments of sound converged and reassembled in his mind, and gradually, a three-dimensional map composed of sound clearly appeared in his consciousness.
"Two patrolmen, one clockwise and one counterclockwise, are walking along the outermost aisle of the room. They are now at the diagonal point, the furthest point, about twenty meters away."
"The one that wasn't moving was in the north of the room, about fifteen meters from the stairwell. I could hear his fingers tapping on the keyboard and flipping switches; the main control panel should be right in front of him."
"The fourth one, the one loitering around, was in the southeast corner of the room, closest to the stairwell, less than ten meters away. He seemed to be cleaning a gun; I heard the sound of metal parts rubbing together."
Chu Hang paused, then added a crucial piece of information: "The loudest electrical noise is from the center of the room, where there are two huge transformers. If we can make some noise nearby, it should drown out the sound of our footsteps as we rush in."
After he finished speaking, he opened his eyes and looked at Steve with some nervousness, wondering if the information he had provided would be useful.
Steve listened, a smile of approval spreading across his face. He reached out and patted Chu Hang on the shoulder heavily. "Well done, Chu Hang! You're our best radar!"
After saying that, he turned to look at Logan, his eyes sharpening. "Logan, your task is the simplest, and also the most crucial."
Logan snorted in response.
“I’ll give you a signal in a bit. I need you to attack this staircase beneath us with all your might. Use your claws, or just your fists, it’s up to you. Make as much noise as possible, even if it means dismantling the staircase. Understand?”
Logan's eyes lit up, and a wild, savage grin spread across his face. Destruction? That was his favorite kind of work.
Steve then looked at Chu Hang, his expression becoming much more serious: "Chu Hang, your target is the one cleaning the gun, the one closest to us. He's the first threat we'll face once we rush in, and we must eliminate him immediately. Remember, don't hesitate, use your fastest speed."
Chu Hang took a deep breath and nodded heavily.
Finally, Steve unfastened a German-made stick grenade, which he had just seized from the two unfortunate men, from his waist. He weighed it in his hand, a cold smile curving his lips.
“As for me,” he said, brandishing the grenade in his hand, “I’m going to give them a ‘surprise’.”
The plan was simple, and also crazy.
Using the loud noise Logan creates to attract everyone's attention, Steve throws a grenade near the transformer in the center of the room, using the explosion's flames and smoke to create chaos and obscure the view.
At the very moment of the explosion, the three of them, like demons emerging from hell, will leap up the stairs and finish off the enemy before they are even dazed and disoriented by the noise and explosion.
"Chu Hang, start the timer." Steve's voice was as calm as ice. "I need the moment when the two patrolmen cross paths on either side of the stairwell. That's when their attention is most scattered and they're slowest to support each other."
Chu Hang closed his eyes again. This time, four moving red dots appeared on the sound map in his mind. He could clearly "see" the footsteps of the two patrolmen approaching little by little.
His heartbeat quickened in sync with the sound of footsteps.
"Ten meters..."
"Five meters..."
"Three meters..."
Just as the two red dots overlapped and then separated, Chu Hang suddenly opened his eyes and shouted, "Now!"
Almost simultaneously with his voice, Steve gestured to Logan.
Logan let out a long-suppressed growl, his massive body taut like a fully drawn bow, unleashing terrifying power in an instant. He didn't even use his claws, but instead slammed his sandbag-sized fists into the metal stair support beside him!
"Bang Dang——!!!"
A deafening metallic roar suddenly exploded in the cramped underground space! It felt like someone had smashed a battering ram right next to his ear, making Chu Hang's eardrums ring and his head spin.
The entire iron ladder shook violently, and the rivets at the joints groaned under the strain, as if they were about to fall apart at any moment.
At the same time, several panicked shouts in German came from upstairs. Clearly, they were startled by the sudden loud noise and their attention was completely drawn to the area downstairs.
At that very moment, Steve moved!
With a sudden flick of his arm, the long-handled grenade, like a cannonball, flew precisely through the narrow gap at the top of the stairs with a piercing whistling sound, tracing a perfect parabola as it landed in the center of the room.
"boom--!!!"
An explosion several times louder than the noise Logan had just made suddenly rang out from upstairs!
The dazzling flames instantly illuminated the entire stairwell, and then billowing black smoke poured in through the gaps.
Steve let out a low growl, grabbed the edge of the stairs with one hand, and with a sudden burst of strength in his arm muscles, he leaped up the stairs as if weightless.
Logan followed closely behind, his beast-like body bursting with astonishing leaping power as he pushed off the swaying stairs and jumped straight up.
Chu Hang gritted his teeth and rushed forward as well.
The moment he rushed out of the stairwell, he was immediately stunned by the scene before him.
Thick smoke billowed throughout the electrical room, the acrid smell of gunpowder making everyone cough. Several light tubes on the ceiling were shattered by the explosion, leaving only a few stubbornly flickering, making the room alternately bright and dark, like a ghostly realm.
The alarm didn't sound. The grenade's power was just right; it only damaged the transformer's casing and created enough chaos without harming the core power supply system.
Chu Hang spotted his target immediately. The soldier responsible for cleaning the gun was crouching on the ground, covering his ears, his face completely stunned by the blast. He was closest to the explosion and had suffered the most impact.
No time to hesitate!
Steve's instructions flashed through Chu Hang's mind, and his blood seemed to ignite at that moment. The powerful energy brought by the Super Soldier Serum instantly spread throughout his body.
His body suddenly lurched forward, so fast that he even left a faint afterimage in the air!
The distance of less than ten meters was covered in the blink of an eye!
The soldier seemed to sense danger, abruptly raising his head, his terrified eyes meeting Chu Hang's cold gaze. He instinctively reached for his gun.
But, it's too late.
Chu Hang acted faster than he thought!
He didn't use a gun or a knife. In that instant, he chose the most primal and direct method.
He concentrated all his strength into his right fist, and with an unstoppable momentum, he slammed it hard into his opponent's chest!
A dull thud even drowned out the surrounding hum of electricity.
Chu Hang felt as if his fist had struck a steel plate covered in leather. The immense recoil made his entire arm go numb.
The Hydra soldier's expression froze instantly. His chest caved in deeply in a visible arc, his body arching backward like a boiled shrimp, then his feet left the ground as he flew backward, crashing heavily into the metal wall behind him with a loud thud, before sliding to the ground like a puddle of mud, completely still.
One punch... and it was over?
Chu Hang stared at his fist, somewhat stunned. He knew he had become stronger, but he hadn't expected to be this strong.
However, on the battlefield, even a second of hesitation can be fatal.
Just as he finished off his target, he caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye that the patrolman who had been on the opposite side had reacted. He hadn't been completely stunned by the explosion and was now raising his gun, the dark muzzle pointed at Chu Hang's back!
Chu Hang's pupils suddenly contracted, and the hairs on his body stood on end! He wanted to dodge, but his body seemed to be frozen in place, and he couldn't react at all.
Just at this critical moment, a dark shadow flashed past like a ghost.
A dull thud as a sharp weapon pierced flesh.
Chu Hang only saw three sharp claws emerge from the soldier's back without warning, the tips still stained with warm blood.
Logan had already taken care of his objective sometime earlier and appeared at the crucial moment. He withdrew his claws expressionlessly, letting the corpse fall limply to the ground.
“Don’t stand there in the middle of the battlefield, rookie!” Logan glanced at him and said in a hoarse voice.
Chu Hang's heart was still pounding. He nodded heavily to Logan, swallowing back the "thank you."
He turned his head to look in the other direction.
Steve's battle is over.
The soldier who had been standing in front of the main control panel, and another patrolman, had both fallen silently to the ground. Steve was standing in front of the control panel, his hands moving at lightning speed as if in a phantom.
From the moment they charged in until they took down all four guards, the entire process took less than ten seconds.
This is the Roaring Commando's top combat strength!
"All done!" Steve pressed the last button, and the continuous hum of electricity in the entire power distribution room instantly subsided by more than half.
He turned around, looked at Chu Hang and Logan who were unharmed, and gave them a relaxed smile: "Very good. Now, the entire factory's external defense system, alarm system, and lighting in most areas are under our control."
He walked to the communication equipment, picked up the microphone, and tuned it to a specific frequency.
“Dughan, did you hear that? I’ve turned off the light in the ‘kitchen.’ It’s time to serve the food.”
Having done all this, he was preparing to completely cut off the factory's power supply, creating the best opportunity for the prisoners who were about to rush in.
But at that moment, Chu Hang, who had been keeping a close watch on his surroundings with his ears, suddenly changed his expression.
"Wait!" He suddenly raised his hand and said with a serious expression.
Steve and Logan's eyes immediately focused on him.
"what happened?"
Chu Hang did not answer immediately. He frowned and tilted his ear, as if trying to figure something out.
“Below… right below this floor we’re standing on…” His voice carried a hint of confusion and unease, “there’s something there.”
"What is it? A patrol?" Steve asked.
“No…” Chu Hang shook his head, his expression turning somewhat strange. “It wasn’t footsteps. It was a… very heavy, rhythmic sound. Thump… thump… thump… like a giant heart beating.”
Chapter 28 What exactly is hidden underneath?
The moment Chu Hang uttered that word, Steve and Logan's expressions changed.
If Chu Hang had mentioned a patrol team or an armory, they probably wouldn't have even batted an eye. A patrol team? Just kill them. An armory? Just blow it up. For people like them, who were used to bathing in gunfire, these things were trivial.
But the word "heart" is a completely different matter.
The word itself exudes an indescribable eeriness.
"Are you sure?" Steve's brows furrowed, the relief he had just felt vanishing from his azure eyes, replaced by extreme wariness. He lowered his voice, each word seemingly squeezed out between clenched teeth, "Is it a human heart, or... something else?"
Chu Hang closed his eyes and listened carefully again, then shook his head uncertainly.
“I don’t know,” he answered honestly. “The sound was so deep and so powerful. Thump…thump…with each beat, I felt the floor beneath my feet tremble. A human heart couldn’t possibly make such a loud noise. It felt…like an elephant or a whale hidden underground.”
After he finished speaking, he himself felt that his analogy was a bit far-fetched. This is the deep forests of Austria; where are you going to find elephants and whales?
Logan didn't speak, but silently walked over and, imitating Chu Hang, half-squatted down, pressing his ear against the cold concrete floor. His furry ears twitched, like a wild wolf detecting danger.
After a dozen seconds, he suddenly stood up, his face turning extremely pale.
“This smell is off,” he said in a hoarse voice, sniffing hard. “Can you smell it? Besides the smell of engine oil and gunpowder, there’s also… a bloody smell. It’s strong, but it’s not fresh blood. It’s like it’s been sitting out for a long time, mixed with formaldehyde and rust. It’s fucking disgusting.”
His reminder immediately alerted Chu Hang and Steve as well.
A strange, complex odor wafted up from the narrow gap at the top of the stairs. Previously masked by the strong smell of gunpowder, the strange smell became particularly noticeable now that the smoke had dissipated.
