Chapter 30 The Lizard Doctor Who Wants All of Humanity to Evolve Together
"So be it, Toby, are you taking this mission or not?"
"If you don't accept the commission, I'll put it on an underground website, and that way I can still earn half the commission~"
Hearing Kingpin's final quip, Toby pondered the pros and cons of the mission for a moment, but decided to accept it anyway.
The $50 million commission, plus the unknown returns for Tony Stark, is enough to make this long trip worthwhile.
"I've accepted the task. While you're at it, also help me get my local passport and plane ticket, and prepare an off-road vehicle and supplies for me there. The money will be deducted from my commission for the next job I do for you."
Upon hearing Toby's agreement, Kingpin on the other end of the phone immediately smiled, but his tone feigned sadness:
"I'll naturally prepare all that for you, but given our relationship, it would be really hurtful to talk to me about money. Just tell me when you plan to leave!"
"And although this isn't my request, I'll still remind you that Tony Stark has been missing for two months now, and the probability of him still being alive is already very small. The later you set off, the smaller that probability becomes."
Toby thought it made sense.
Although he had seen the movie, he knew that Tony was most likely not dead.
But as time went on, Tony inevitably became affected by his own butterfly effect, and thus truly died in a cave in Afghanistan.
So, to make sure his $50 million didn't go down the drain, Toby decided to set off as soon as possible:
"Then let's do it tomorrow. Can you book me a flight for tomorrow morning?"
"Okay, I'll have someone deliver your passport and plane ticket to your house first thing tomorrow morning."
After finishing discussing the mission, Kingpin exchanged a few more pleasantries with Toby before hanging up the phone, satisfied.
Kingpin gave this big order to Toby partly to further strengthen his relationship with Toby and do him a favor.
On the one hand, it was also to have Toby, the "Single King," complete this almost impossible task for him, thus consolidating the reliable reputation of his Kingpin Empire.
Now that both objectives had been achieved, Kingpin naturally left satisfied...
Gwen, exhausted from exercising in the afternoon, finally woke up groggily as night approached.
Since Gwen has to go to school tomorrow, Monday, the two didn't have a second round, so as not to make Gwen, the model student, miss school tomorrow.
So after having dinner together, Toby drove Gwen home.
Of course, on the way back, Toby also told Gwen that he would be going on a "business trip" to another city for a while.
Although Gwen always knew about Toby's other identity, she never asked him too much about it.
Therefore, although Gwen guessed that this "business trip" was definitely not simple, she only told Toby to be careful and did not try to find out more.
This is also why Toby likes Gwen. Gwen is one of the few normal female characters in the world of American comics. She is devoted, calm, and trusts the person she likes immensely.
After taking the wounded Gwen home, Toby also rushed back to his own home.
As soon as they entered the house, Ben and May reacted just like Peter had before, with expressions of surprise and disbelief.
Toby didn't explain much, only telling the elderly couple that he was going on a business trip out of town for a while the next morning.
The elderly couple did not question this further.
Although Toby doesn't often "go on business trips," he does go on a few business trips a year, so the elderly couple didn't think much of it.
When Toby arrived at the basement and opened the passageway to the second floor, he saw Peter talking to Dr. Connors, who was tied to the corner of a table, in the laboratory.
Hearing the door open behind him, Peter turned around and saw Toby, and couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief.
He jogged over to Toby and whispered:
"Toby, I still think Dr. Connors is acting strangely. Although he's not in his lizardman form right now, he seems a bit mentally unstable, and his speech is somewhat... extreme?"
Upon hearing this, Toby nodded knowingly: "I understand. You go upstairs and rest. I'll take over the rest."
Peter, who had stayed up all night tracking the lizardmen and had spent the entire day guarding them, was exhausted.
Therefore, upon hearing that Toby had taken over, he had no intention of staying and left quickly, as if relieved.
Toby wasn't surprised that Peter said Dr. Connors's words were somewhat extreme.
Although the effects of Dr. Connors' lizard regeneration serum have worn off, he has regressed into human form.
But this does not mean that Dr. Connors has truly recovered completely.
If he remembered correctly, ever since Dr. Connors became a lizardman, a second evil personality, much like the Green Goblin, had emerged within him due to the side effects of the serum.
This evil personality will often bewitch the main personality, causing the host to gradually go to extremes.
Dr. Connors is currently in this stage of being misled.
After Peter left, Toby slowly walked up to Dr. Connors and said calmly, "Doctor, are you going to try a softer approach or a harder one?"
Dr. Connors, who was tied to the corner of the table by Peter, looked at Toby and revealed a wicked smile:
"Heh heh, Toby Parker, you and your cousin Peter Parker, I should have guessed it long ago. As Richard's son and nephew, neither of you are as simple as you seem!"
"You and I are both advanced beings resulting from genetic evolution. As advanced beings, I think we shouldn't be enemies, but rather cooperate, shouldn't we?"
Upon hearing this, Toby's eyes narrowed, and he crossed his arms, asking, "Oh? How do you want to cooperate?"
Dr. Connors' eyes lit up when he saw that Toby hadn't been directly rejected by Peter as he had when he spoke to him before, and his tone became more enthusiastic:
"Of course, it's through cooperation that all of humanity evolves together!"
"Our human bodies are far too fragile. A minor illness or injury can lead to disability or death. As the dominant species on this planet, humans shouldn't be so vulnerable!"
"We humans should be as perfect as you and me!"
"Just imagine, if all humans possessed your and Peter's dexterity and strength, along with the self-healing abilities of my lizard regeneration serum, then they would truly deserve the title of planetary overlords!"
"But if we cooperate, and you give me some of your and Peter's blood, along with the Osborn Corporation's Canary Device (a drug dispensing device capable of covering an entire city), once I develop the perfect serum combining our strengths, we can achieve a complete evolution of an entire city in one go!"
"In less than a month, we can complete the genetic evolution of the entire nation, and in just one year, we can transform the entire world into perfect organisms!"
"This is my grand plan!!"
