Chapter 308 - 306: Who on Earth Is She?
Aaron was on the phone nearby. "Got it. Keep an eye on the bank account for the incoming transfer."
After hanging up, Aaron walked back. "Sir, I’ve had the money sent to that teacher, Mr. Liu."
"Mm," Kian Keller said, his gaze fixed on the screen in front of him.
On the six-paneled security monitor, the girl quickly stuffed a book into her bag.
A small smile touched Kian Keller’s lips.
Seeing this, Zelo, who was back from his vacation, sighed. "If Miss Grant finds out you’re scheming against her like this, she’ll probably pick another fight with you."
"Why are you doing this?"
"To confirm something."
Kian Keller didn’t watch the rest of the surveillance footage. He simply turned it off.
The man looked at Zelo. "The documents."
Zelo stepped forward and handed him the file. "You know, I dropped everything with my wife and flew straight here. Anyway, take a look. This should be it."
"Following the timeline, this seems to be where it all started."
"This is the statement from the Grant family’s maid. And this is the recollection from the Lee family’s daughter."
"The Grant family maid said that Miss Grant seemed to have fallen into the swimming pool that day. She ran a high fever, and when she woke up, it was like she had become a completely different person."
"The timelines from these few people more or less match up."
"The one from the Lee family said she and Miss Grant had been playmates since they were little. But then, for some reason, Miss Grant rarely attended their little gatherings anymore."
"The last time they met was at the coming-of-age ceremony. She felt that Miss Grant wasn’t doing well, so she offered to help her scheme up some revenge against Serena Grant. The strange thing is, Miss Grant refused."
"Logically, Miss Grant should despise Serena Grant. She shouldn’t have refused such a perfect opportunity. After all, the Lee family’s daughter would have been the mastermind, and Miss Grant could have walked away blameless. It seemed far more effective than any of her previous attempts to go after Serena Grant."
Seeing Kian Keller had already read ahead, Zelo added, "However, Miss Grant is definitely Yuri Sinclair’s daughter. I also found her physical exam reports from before and after that point in time. The blood types match."
"I also compared them with her current records from the archives. No discrepancies."
"So, there’s no evidence to support the theory that she was replaced by someone else. At most, you could just call it... a drastic change in personality."
"Maybe she just decided that targeting Serena Grant was pointless and it would be better to work hard and improve herself instead?"
"A person can change their temperament overnight, but habits, the look in their eyes, their mannerisms—those can’t be changed in such a short time."
Kian Keller put down the documents. "Is there anything else?"
"I found the number for one of Miss Grant’s old deskmates. I tried calling during the day, but no one answered. I’ll try again now."
The phone rang for a bit before someone picked up, cursing impatiently.
It was a young man.
Zelo chuckled, trying to soothe the other person’s temper. "Sorry, sorry to bother you at this hour."
"You’re the young master of the Wallace family from Jynsia, right? Hey, don’t be so hot-headed. I’m Mr. Kian Keller’s assistant."
"Kian... who did you say?"
"Mr. Kian Keller. We were wondering if you have a moment for a few questions. Of course, if it’s not a good time, that’s fine. It’s not like Nathan Wallace is a hard man to find."
"...I’m free."
Zelo smiled and put the phone on speaker. "Do you know Mia Grant?"
"Yeah. We were high school classmates."
"Were you two close?"
"What do you mean by ’close’?"
"Did you interact much?"
"It was okay. We were deskmates for a few days in high school."
The seating chart in class was shuffled once a month.
He’d been lucky enough to be her deskmate two or three times.
"But I didn’t know her that well. I left the country a few days into senior year."
"That’s fine. We just want to know if you noticed anything... unusual about her when you knew her."
’You guys are so weird.’ Remembering who was on the other end, the young man swallowed his curse. "I don’t know."
"Think carefully. It’s alright, we’re not in a hurry. You can take your time to remember."
"..."
"I barely even spoke to her..."
Zelo laughed. "But our records show that you wrote Mia Grant a love letter."
The person on the other end was silent for a few seconds. "Yeah, I pursued her for a while."
The young man sounded embarrassed. He paused, then continued, "She rejected me, too. She even posted my love letter on the public notice board, and the whole school laughed at me. We never spoke again after that."
Zelo glanced at Kian Keller, and after getting a nod, asked the young man, "When did she reject you? Do you remember the date?"
"Of course I remember. I could tell you the exact minute."
After giving a specific time, the young man added a few seconds later, "You want to know what was unusual? She was always acting weird."
"Like she had a split personality."
"For example?"
"For example, she was really nice to me before, and I thought she was interested. Then the moment I confessed, she did that. Now I think she did it on purpose, just keeping me as a backup. I knew she liked Felix Sinclair from the class next door! I don’t know what she was think..."
"Ahem." Zelo cleared his throat, cutting him off. "Anything else? Anything at all, big or small."
"Oh, the way she ate and wrote was weird, too. Really awkward. She’d switch between her left and right hands, and she was always bumping into me. I’d curse her out, and she wouldn’t even fight back, she’d just apologize. It was insane."
At first, the young man claimed he didn’t know Mia Grant well, but once he started talking, it was like he’d opened the floodgates. Zelo couldn’t get a word in edgewise for the rest of the call, listening to the guy’s twenty-six-minute monologue, delivered as if he were an expert on the topic.
After the call ended, Zelo dug a finger in his ear. "So much useless chatter. Not a single helpful thing in there."
"It wasn’t all useless," Aaron said, looking at Kian Keller. "Miss Grant is left-handed?"
Before Kian could answer, Zelo scoffed. "I don’t remember her being left-handed."
They were Kian Keller’s personal aides; it wasn’t as if they’d never seen Mia Grant eat a meal with him.
Across from them, Kian Keller remained silent for a long time.
He was trying to remember.
Unfortunately, he came up with nothing new.
In his memory, Mia Grant had never shown any indication of being left-handed.
He had Zelo verify it. A few minutes later, a maid who used to serve Mia Grant at the Grant family home confirmed that she was not left-handed.
"Sir? Sir?"
Zelo called out.
In his wheelchair, Kian Keller snapped out of his thoughts and shot him a glance.
Zelo looked at him, confused. "If what that Wallace kid said is true, and the part about her being left-handed is true, then we can’t rule out the possibility that she really was replaced."
"But can two identical people really exist in this world?"
"Same blood type, DNA, appearance... completely identical. Don’t tell me they were twins?"
"Should we... ask Yuri Sinclair?"
Before Kian Keller could answer, the phone on the table suddenly vibrated.
A call was coming in.
Aaron picked it up to look, and his expression changed slightly.
He then handed it over. "It’s Miss Grant."
