Chapter 663 The Werewolf Who Can Transform Freely
Almost every wizard knows that werewolves transform into mindless beasts during the full moon, which is also when they are most dangerous.
But outside of the full moon, werewolves and normal wizards are no different.
However, Sirius told him that Lupin had transformed yesterday—on a night that wasn't a full moon?
How could that be? If werewolves could really transform at will, the magical world would have been in a panic long ago, and war would have followed—a war between wizards and werewolves.
After all, werewolves are far stronger than ordinary wizards. Although they cannot use magic, their tough fur can withstand most spells, and their sharp claws and teeth can easily pierce through a wizard's body.
The fact that werewolves can only transform during a full moon is not only a characteristic of werewolves, but also a limitation for them.
"Are you sure?" Siren asked.
"At first I didn't believe it either," Sirius said. "But he just showed it to me again, just ten minutes ago."
Xilun subconsciously looked out the window.
It was still snowing outside, and the morning sunlight shone on the snow on the windowsill, making it look like it was edged with gold.
It's nine in the morning now, and it's been fully light for several hours now—meaning that Lupin can transform not only when it's not a full moon, but also during the day?
"Oh, by the way, we're getting ready to head to Hogsmeade now," Sirius continued.
"Are you here to see Dumbledore?" Sirius asked, nodding thoughtfully. "That makes sense. The headmaster is knowledgeable and experienced; perhaps he knows what's going on."
"No, we're not planning to go to Dumbledore," Sirius shook his head and said, "We're going to go to you."
"Looking for me?"
“That’s right,” Sirius said. “Moonface and I both suspect that it was the spell from that day that caused this special change in him.”
After saying that, Sirius's head disappeared from the fire.
Xilun stood up and realized that he was surrounded by curious students. But he didn't explain anything. Instead, he quickly walked out of the tower and rushed to the lobby.
About ten minutes later, Sirius and Lupin came in from outside.
"I was just thinking about whether or not to go to Hogsmeade through the secret passage."
"Don't do that," Sirius said. "To be honest, Hogsmeade isn't very safe right now. The Hog's Head is full of wizards of unknown origin."
"I know," Xiren said, glancing at Lupin beside him.
"What exactly happened?"
"Let's go somewhere else. How about that magical house from before?"
"no problem."
The three of them then went to the House of Requirement.
Xilun closed the door and turned his head to see Lupin's head being stretched out, his body becoming longer, his shoulders arching, and short gray-black hair growing on his face and hands, his fingers curving into sharp claws.
In just a few seconds, he transformed into a wolf-like monster—a werewolf.
But unlike most werewolves, Lupin transforms voluntarily, and more importantly, his eyes remain bright.
Seeing is believing, and now Sirius had personally confirmed Sirius's words, but he still couldn't believe it.
"But—how is that possible?"
"We suspect this is related to your unicorn magic," Lupin said.
This was the first time Xilun had heard him speak while he was transformed into a werewolf; his voice was much deeper than his normal voice.
Xiren immediately summoned the unicorn's spirit.
Just like last time, it didn't react to the three people present at all, and just leisurely strolled slowly in mid-air.
Xiren also remembered something else: when the unicorn passed through Lupin's body, he briefly saw Lupin's soul—exactly the same as it was now, a werewolf.
In other words, the werewolf's curse did not attach to the soul, but directly altered it, which is the main reason why the unicorn did not react at all.
In a sense, Lupin's soul is still intact, only in a different form.
"But I can't think of any other possibility," Lupin said, having already returned to his original form.
"This change only occurred after we returned from Hogwarts, and the only thing I can think of is your unicorn magic."
"Is it possible—" Sirius thought for a moment, then said thoughtfully, "When the unicorn destroyed the Echoing Curse attached to Lupin's soul, it also took something else with it, such as a part of the werewolf's curse."
Xilun didn't know either. Logically speaking, the werewolf's curse had already merged with Lupin's soul and couldn't be separated at all, but now it seemed that this was the only explanation.
He then commanded the unicorn spirit to attack Lupin, but as expected, there was no reaction at all.
Left with no other option, Celeste took Lupin to the headmaster's office and found Dumbledore, who was resting there.
Dumbledore has been resting lately, and neither Snape nor Professor McGonagall wanted him to leave until the curse on his arm was completely removed.
Siren thought that Dumbledore had a similar experience to Lupin, and that they might have some common topics to discuss.
He noticed that when Lupin transformed into a werewolf in the principal's office, the principals in the portraits widened their eyes again and crowded into the frame closest to Lupin once more.
Then, nothing happened to Xilun.
Dumbledore kicked him out of the headmaster's office, saying that he felt uncomfortable just looking at him.
Fortunately, Sirius Black was there to keep him company.
As the last member of the Black family, Sirius Black had barely stepped into the headmaster's office when Phineas Black started nagging him to quickly peel off the velvet cloth from the portrait in the old house and throw it away.
Dumbledore found it a bit noisy and simply kicked them both out.
"Don't worry, no matter what, this is a good thing," Sirius said to Sirius, who looked worried, at the entrance to the principal's office.
If a being can transform into a werewolf at any time without losing its mind, then there are plenty of wizards in the magical world willing to be bitten by a werewolf.
With skin that can ignore most spells, a powerful body, and amazing regenerative abilities, werewolves are arguably far more powerful than ordinary wizards. Moreover, they possess these powers without paying any price—just a bite would do the trick, something many wizards would surely not refuse.
Of course, the prerequisite is that one must be like Lupin, able to control their transformation at any time, and remain clear-headed after transforming, not influenced by the instinct for violence and killing.
If that doesn't work, then that's another story.
"Yes, you're right, this is a good thing." Sirius seemed to have figured this out as well, and looked much more relaxed.
