Chapter 16 S-Rank Request: Slay the Pirates!
Chapter 16 S-Rank Request: Slay the Pirates!
Oh oh oh!
The train slowly came to a stop at the station, with large amounts of steam billowing from the fuel chamber at the front of the locomotive.
Passengers carrying large and small bags got off the train one after another, making a lot of noise and bustle.
Amidst the crowd, Chase, carrying a bundle, walked along the streets with a distinctly medieval feel, curiously observing this city he had never set foot in before.
This is Asroba, a port city of the Kingdom of Fiore, adjacent to Harugion. It is surrounded by mountains on two sides and faces the sea on one side, making it relatively remote.
On Makarov's advice, Chase, who just wanted to take a stroll, chose an S-level commission with a moderate difficulty level.
And Asropa is the destination of this commission!
Chase randomly found a public bench on the street and sat down, taking out a service form with a bright red "S" printed on it from his pocket.
[S-Rank Mission: Suppress the Pirates Who Are Running Rampant on the High Seas]
[Request details: In recent months, a group of pirates, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, have been active in the Asroba Sea, relentlessly attacking passing ships and causing immense damage and disaster. Hundreds have already perished at their hands. Please capture this incredibly brutal group of pirates alive.]
[Commission Fee: 990 million J]
[Client: Marshall Whitedo]
[Location of the project: Abandoned lighthouse on the southern coast of Asroba]
[Special Note: This mission requires capturing pirates alive, which is extremely dangerous. Please accept the mission with caution.]
"According to the chairman, all the mages who accepted this commission have mysteriously disappeared without a trace. No one has ever returned safely, and not even a trace of a body has been found. That's why they were promoted to S-rank."
"While anything can happen at sea, it's still a bit too strange that all the mages have disappeared."
"Putting aside the ferocity of pirates for now, surely some ships set sail without encountering any pirates and return empty-handed, right?"
This was the biggest contradiction that Chess had been pondering all the way on the train.
It goes without saying that the missing mages must have encountered pirates; there's no doubt about that.
Unlike bandits who are confined to towns or fixed mountain strongholds, pirates operate in the vast ocean. So how do they accurately target the mages who accept their commissions each time?
You can't possibly use Observation Haki to detect things!
Oops, I've gotten a bit off-topic.
Chess coughed lightly, pulled himself together, and got up to walk towards the end of the city street.
To learn more details, we need to meet with the client first.
The location marked as "Abandoned Lighthouse" is not a particularly difficult place to find in Asloba.
Chase grabbed a few locals at random and, after some friendly questioning, quickly obtained their accurate location.
The abandoned lighthouse is located on the southern coast of Asroba. It can be reached by walking straight along the town's granite main road and passing through a small area of tropical jungle.
Chase stood on the overgrown wasteland and looked up to see a lighthouse with mottled walls standing on the desolate coastal cliffs.
The original white paint is almost gone, and the iron ladder has been corroded by salt into irregular gray spots. The rusty iron ladder seems to be telling the story of its past glory.
The sea breeze howled past, passing through the iron railings at the base of the lighthouse, making a mournful sound.
"It's really quite abandoned."
After a quick look around, Chase strode forward without hesitation.
He was genuinely curious as to why someone who could provide nearly ten million in commission would live in such a dilapidated place.
I pushed open the slightly ajar rusty iron door at the bottom of the lighthouse, and a few rays of sunlight slanted down through the narrow window, landing on the floor tiles with weeds growing in the cracks, creating bursts of light.
In the midst of the light, next to an old lounge, a thin man sat alone at a simple wooden table, drinking tea.
"Hello, are you Mr. Marshall White?" Chase greeted him.
Hearing the noise, the thin man put down his teacup, looked at Chess from a distance of several meters, and asked with a puzzled expression, "Young man, do you need something from me?"
"Here's the thing, I'm a mage from Fairy Tail. Did you issue this request?"
Chase pointed to the Fairy Tail crest branded on his right arm and pulled out a commission form from his pocket.
"That's right! That's great! I never expected that the guild that accepted this commission would be the most famous one in Fiore!"
Upon hearing that it was Fairy Tail, the skinny man's numb expression suddenly changed. He jogged over, grabbed Chess's hand, and exclaimed excitedly, "Please, you absolutely must help me catch those damned pirates!"
"Um, I know you're in a hurry, but don't worry, that's exactly why I came here."
Chase subtly removed the man's hand from hers.
Upon closer inspection, the thin man appeared to be quite young, probably in his thirties, and was wearing a simple shirt.
His face was gaunt, and there was a scar running across half of his right cheek above his eye.
"I'm sorry, I lost my composure."
Marshall looked apologetic and invited Chase to the wooden table, personally pouring him a cup of hot tea.
After quickly verifying the information on the order form and confirming the identity of the client, Chase got straight to the point:
"I've read the contents of the commission. I wonder what specific characteristics the pirates Mr. Marshall is tasked with defeating have?"
This is the most important thing. It would be ridiculous if we spent all our time catching the wrong pirate.
"I'll never forget those pirates, even if I turn to ashes. Their pirate flag was a demon claw, and their captain had a face full of scars, wore a top black hat, and had a necklace made of skulls hanging from his chest!"
When pirates were mentioned, Marshall's gentle and friendly attitude vanished, replaced by a fierce glare that, accentuated by his scar, appeared somewhat menacing.
"Are there any other characteristics, such as the appearance of the pirate ship, the crew's attire, and the types of magic they use?"
Chase noticed Marshall's emotional changes and took a small sip of his hot tea.
The tea tasted bitter and astringent, a world apart from the tea brewed by Mila!
"I'm sorry, their appearance and attire are fine, but as for the types of magic they use..."
Marshall looked apologetic. "I've only ever seen that pirate captain use magic that can spew out flames."
"Okay, I've got it." Chase nodded slightly.
After understanding the basic information, he looked at Marshall sitting opposite him and asked in a deep voice, "May I ask why you placed this request?"
Logically speaking, the task of suppressing pirates should be the responsibility of the Fiore Kingdom's naval guards, or entrusted to the guild alliance.
The skinny man in front of me doesn't seem like the type to be bored and spend money to rid the people of evil, does he?
Of course, he wasn't worried about the commission.
For S-level commissions like this, the commissioner's funds need to be reviewed by the review board to ensure that the commissioner can afford to pay before the commission is released.
Mentioning this, Marshall's already ferocious face became even more distorted, and he slammed his fist heavily on the table, blood vessels appearing in his eyes.
"They... those damned beasts, cruelly murdered my wife and daughters! I will personally tear them to pieces, chop them into countless fragments, and throw them into the sea to feed the fish!"
"Therefore, I have only one request: capture them alive and bring them to me!!"
"All the previous mages failed, failed..."
As they were talking, Marshall suddenly grabbed Chase's arm, his voice pleading, "Mr. Chase, you're that famous Fairy Tail mage, please, you have to help me!"
"This is my last hope!!"
This time, Chase didn't push away the seemingly deranged man in front of him. Instead, he raised his hand with a serious expression and gently patted the man's shoulder.
"Don't worry, Fairy Tail is not like those shady guilds."
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Marshall burst into tears, saying, "Thank you, thank you..."
"There's one last question: how do I find those pirates?" Chase asked.
"All I know is that they often frequent the area near trade routes. If you don't have a better option, I can recommend that you board an Asropa merchant ship."
Marshall wiped away his tears and said sadly, "That's what all the previous mages did. Unfortunately, I never got to see them return."
Upon hearing this, Chess frowned slightly, but quickly regained his composure.
"I understand. That's what we'll do then. Thank you, Mr. Marshall."
